Don't Touch That TV Screen - No, Really - I'm Serious - Don't!

So you just bought a flat screen TV and no one told you anything about care and cleaning?

"What do you mean, care and cleaning?" some will say. "I grew up with a TV in the house, didn't I? Everybody knows how to take care of a TV . . . right? You just dust it off every couple of months and don't let the kids chew on the power cord. . . right?"

Well-l-l-l, there's a little more to it than that when you own a Plasma, DLP or LCD flat screen TV. Some of it is common sense, but a lot what you need to know is unique to caring for the new television technology.

Special care must be taken when handling a flat screen TV, especially when touching or cleaning the display screen. Thin sheets of glass hold the Plasma cells on a flat screen TV, if they crack, the screen is ruined and cannot be repaired!

Bottom line: you need to know what you're doing if you want to protect your expensive new TV from damage. You're in luck . . . I'm about to tell you!

1) Avoid Touching The Screen!

Handle the TV only by the sides and bottom. Do your best not to touch the screen; don't rub, scrub, tap, hit or touch it, since this could scratch, mar or permanently damage the screen. I actually want to encourage you not to touch the screen with your bare hands. (Good luck keeping the kids away from it!)

2) Keep Your Plasma TV Upright!

Whether you're moving it, installing it, storing or displaying it, you should never lay your Plasma flat on it's face, even if the directions tell you to. The plasma elements that make up the picture are sandwiched between two thin layers of glass. If these glass panels crack, your TV screen will be ruined. Large LCD and DLP display screens can be just as delicate.

3) Clean Your Flat Screen TV Correctly!

Even routine cleaning can present special challenges. You shouldn't use dust cloths, chemical cleansers, soaps, sprays, alcohol or aerosols. Please don't rub the screen, just dust it gently with absorbent cotton or chamois only. Clean the frame with a slightly moist sponge or cloth, don't use chemicals or soaps. It's best to unplug the TV before you begin cleaning.

4) Buy A Good Surge Protector!

Spring for a quality surge protector with a reset button and power switch. A phone line or ethernet surge protector for your modem and a coax surge protector for cable TV are great features to look for. If you can't find these features on a power surge protector you can order them separately. A basic surge protector costs less than , and a really good one costs - . There's no excuse for not connecting every major appliance in your house to one. One lightning strike, one power surge and your ,500 flat screen TV could be fried!

5) Don't Let Your Big Screen TV Tip Over!

Most table stands are well designed, but be aware! When your teenager tries to imitate Kobe's fantastic slam dunk or your toddler jumps up to slap Sponge Bob on the head, you don't want a 150-pound big screen TV toppling over on them. Make sure your TV stand is sturdy, that it's large enough to hold your TV (6-inches wider than the base) and is positioned against a wall, away from doorways and foot traffic.

6) Make Sure Your Wall Mount Is Properly Installed!

A correctly installed wall mount has little chance of allowing your TV to tip over; just one more reason to get a professional installation. If Harry Handyman from next door installs your Plasma and the mount comes off the wall, you could be facing substantial damage or injury. If you don't know how to run wiring inside your wall, get a pro to do it.

7) Avoid Screen Burn-In!

Plasma displays have improved recently, but screen burn-in is still possible. Static images that don't move or change, like video game scores, TV station logos, stock ticker displays and computer programs can burn images permanently into a Plasma screen. It may take weeks, months or years for the damage to become permanent, but it certainly can. LCD and DLP TVs cannot suffer burn-in.

With proper care, your big screen TV will give your family decades of brilliant service and lasting memories. Just tune in to Entourage and enjoy!

How to Determine Speaker Placement for Built-In Home Theater Speakers

So you've decided on putting in your custom home theater speakers in that new man cave of yours. Movies will take on a whole new experience, Super Bowl parties?! Bring it on!

Before you shop for speakers, stop for a minute to plan. Remember your Dad telling you "measure twice, cut once"?

There are a few options for speaker placement in home theaters. Some of you will experience room constraints. You might have windows or doors at the "ideal" speaker location; a fireplace might be the center piece of the room. Don't worry, I can point you in the right direction.

There are 2 stages of decisions about where you are going to mount your speakers:

Which walls or ceilings Where ON those walls/ceilings

Let me suggest the "ideal" location. From my experience, the best speaker locations for a 5.1 surround in wall speaker home theater system is front left, center and right speakers in the front wall level with your screen and the rear speakers in the side walls behind your listening area by about 6 feet pointing toward each other.

Ideally the subwoofer would be toward the front of the room, but can be anywhere in the room if that's not possible. In this scenario, seats are in the middle of the room.

The locations for a 7.1 are similar. The decision to have a 7.1 over a 5.1 is usually decided by if your room needs it.

I think a room smaller than 20 feet deep really doesn't "need" a 7.1 type system as you're likely to be sitting near the back wall and the 6th and 7th channels (mid side speakers) are placed beside your sitting position to help fill in the gap between the front speakers and rear speakers.

The extra speakers ahead of your listening area aren't doing much good. The locations for the front speakers are the same, the rear speakers move back another 4 ft. behind to about 10 ft. total from your sitting area and the "mid side" speakers should be in the walls next to your sitting location pointing at each other.

I know, I know, I hear you saying that your room can't work like that. It's ok. We're installing a home theater in our homes not the other way around.

The next best locations are (in order of better to ok):

Front wall, rear ceilings, wall mid sides (7.1) Front wall, rear ceilings, ceiling mid sides (7.1) Front wall, rear wall pointing forward, wall mid sides (7.1) Front wall, rear wall pointing forward, ceiling mid sides (7.1) All Ceiling

Now that you've decided "which walls/ceilings" you want the speakers, we can put them in the ideal position.

The center channel should be above or below the screen. If you have a question about which, error on the higher side, above. If you have a drop down screen, below is the best place.

The left and the right speakers are the most important placement decisions! This is where you will get most of your imaging advantages from your system and this placement will anchor the other speakers positioning.

From the best seat in the house, you want to have a 45 degree spread between your left and right speakers. Take your arms and point them straight to the side (like you're getting ready for a sobriety check, I hear this is how it starts!), that's 180 degrees separation. When you point straight ahead, that's 0 degrees. At 45 degrees, you'll be pointing at your ideal speaker location from the best seat in the house. The height off the floor should match up to somewhere between the top and bottom of your screen...again if in doubt, error on the high side.

The rear speakers should be on the same plane as the front speakers. Place them behind your seating area by about 6 feet. They should be about 7-9 feet high if they are in the wall. If your seat is up against the rear wall, then use ceiling speakers and place them a few feet outside the plane of your front speakers.

The mid sides in a 7.1 system should be right beside your seating area 7-9 feet high. If in the ceiling, still beside your seating area on the same plane as the front speakers width wise.

With a ceiling only location, the center should be directly over the screen, The front left and right speakers should be separated by the 45 degree rule as mentioned above. The front 3 speakers should be no more than 30" away from the front wall.

The rear and mid side speakers are on the same plane as the front speakers.

If you decide on all ceiling speakers, there is a new design in ceiling speakers that have the WHOLE speaker array inside the frame ANGLED so that the speakers are pointed toward your seating area instead of pointing straight down, giving you a better front image. Here's an example here.

Fixed TV Mounts - Pros &amp; Cons

Before you think about buying any type of fixed TV mounts, it is important to know where you are planning on mounting your TV. Fixed TV mounts are the most limiting when it comes to brackets as they hold the TV flush against a wall.

As a result of their limitations and where they are positioned, they do not allow any extra movement horizontally or vertically and tend to be the cheaper option to purchase. It is also a good idea to bare in mind the cables that need to be plugged into the TV, as fixed TV mounts can make access difficult.

Consisting of two parts - one part that is fixed to the wall and the second that is fixed to the back of the TV - fixed TV mounts have one particular advantage, whereby they sit flat against a wall, with usually an extension that reaches an inch. However, several disadvantages to fixed TV mounts include the screen is not movable once mounted, while someone sitting on the side or the floor would not be able to see the screen well.

However, if you are thinking about fixed mounts, you need to find out whether or not your TV is able to be wall mounted and if it will successfully attach to the LCDTV wall mount bracket. One thing to bear in mind is that it all depends on what TV model you have, as each method of attaching the TV to the bracket can ultimately be different. Make sure you know how your TV attaches, which will help you to purchase the right one.

Particularly suited to flat screen TV's, the fixed LCD TV Wall mounts are usually the easiest to install compared to tilting and full motion wall mounts, as they only require two parts. However, because they are flush against the wall, in order to change out any of the cables you would need to remove the flat panel from the wall in order to change the cables. A feat you would not have to do with a tilting wall mount or a full motion wall mount.

The positive argument says you'll create the same deck access, long life and load carrying capability plus you're adding seriously cool looks which may translate into improved home values. The less sanguine argument states that you'll find someone who has a physical difficulty or even a certain mental hang-up about approaching a deck spiral staircase, and of course seriously large objects (think huge grills, furniture, pianos, a team of Sumo wrestlers) generate difficult access-use problems.

No longer rough milled logs strung up outside Lincoln's Illinois cabin, modern decks get incredible finishing treatment options including metal deck railings (think steel, alloys)...cable deck railings (think thin-profile high strength steel safety cables held taut between upright posts)...or ultra-modernist see-through safety glass deck railings. How to Make an Outdoor TV Enclosure For an LCD TV

We all know that times are tight, so if you are planning on treating yourself and you want to install an LCD television in your garden, or even to put digital signage in outside your store, we will try to guide you through the mine field.
 
The first thing you need to do is establish were the television is to be located, is this on a wall, or suspended from a ceiling or on a pedestal stand?
 
Most enclosures come with integral mounting lugs, however look out for the enclosures that have a rear bracket that bolts straight into the back of the enclosure. Why, I hear you ask, well quite simply, the threaded holes in the rear of the enclosure once it's bolted and in position will actually allow water to tract through the thread on each hole and over a period of time, water will enter the enclosure and cause condensation inside the unit, causing the display to fail.
 
Then you need to see what size of display you can afford, this will dictate everything. Once you have decided upon the size of the TV, you then need to think of the finish of the enclosure, is going to be timber or steel?
 
Then you need to think about how you are going to get the cables inside the enclosure, whilst maintaining a waterproof seal, however this depend upon the average temperature were you are and in this changing world, the climate is extremely changeable.
 
Then you need to think about cooling, is this going to be a simple unit, so when you open the front doors to view the television, the air circulates around the TV, this is ideal is countries such as the USA, when the temperature is dry, rather than wet.
 
If it is going to be a steel unit, this is a totally different ball game and we will look at this some other time.
